• Question: Have you ever won any compitions for engineering ?

      I once won a runner-up prize for being a “Rising Star” as a women in technology from Scotland. A bit niche! I did however win a few prizes in university for work I’d done, either technical or within the engineering community.

      My company wins prizes for engineering all the time though – hopefully someday soon I’ll be going to pick one of those up for something I’ve worked on!

      No, I’m afraid not. I don’t really enter a lot of competitions.

      Just last weekend I took part in a Hackathon, which is an event that runs for a day or two where teams form to try to complete a project in the allocated time.

      The one I attended (www.scihackdaydublin.com) ran for about 30 hours, from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.
      3 of my colleagues from work went with me. We decided to try to adapt an off-the-shelf remote control car to be controlled by EMG (muscle) signals.
      It was a really enjoyable event. We worked straight through Saturday night. It was quite frantic at times. We met a load of interesting people, saw loads of cool projects, and won the best in show award.
      The prize was a laser cut wooden medal, and the pride of having taken part and won.

      Also, the event was sponsored by Science Foundation Ireland, like this competition.
      SFI funded all of the food. We got pastries for breakfast and delicious sandwiches for lunch on both days, and pizzas were ordered for everyone on Saturday evening.
      Entry to the event was completely free! It’s an amazing event, and I’ll definitely be trying to take part again in future years.

      I have won an Italian prize from the italian society for electromagnetism last year for a project on food contamination monitoring.
