I’ve liked computer programming since I was a kid, but what I love about robotics is that you get to see your program doing something in the physical world. Even when I program a basic robot to do something simple, it’s exciting to switch it on and see if it behaves the way I planned. As robotics advances, machines can actually become physically simpler and more of the smart design is in the software that controls it. Also, the particular type of programming that I do on robots tends to be quite clean and uncluttered compared to writing an application that runs on a laptop or phone. For teaching programming, robotics is really good motivation for my students – they get to see what there program is doing by watching how the robot moves. That can really help people to understand programming fundamentals that they can apply to things outside robotics.
